Thinking Outside the Box

Prince Castle, Inc.

A manufacturer of food service equipment, Prince Castle helps improve operations and product quality for many top restaurants. Products include holding bins, toasters, waste/maintenance products and ovens; many of these weigh hundreds of pounds and cost thousands of dollars.

Prince Castle trusts only JaMar Packaging for every aspect of their packaging needs, from design to inventory.

“JaMar is a flagship company that Prince Castle uses to define what a supplier partner is – willingness to offer services that go beyond the call of a packaging company”

-Kristin DaVanon, Director of Procurement and Operations at Prince Castle

JaMar’s custom design helps cut costs for Prince Castle through the elimination of outsourcing design. Also, JaMar strives to provide superior packaging while reducing material and shipping costs whenever possible—JaMar promises to save Prince Castle at least 5% of annual gross sales or they will provide a rebate.

Through high involvement and close attention, JaMar has strategized and optimized Prince Castle's production flow through JIT and Kanban lean manufacturing processes. Visual monitoring of inventory through a Kanban pull system helps create and determine Prince Castle’s supply equilibrium, reinforced with vendor managed inventory.

Vendor managed inventory has reduced labor costs and maximized floor space at Prince Castle, as JaMar monitors and delivers inventory to each production line end destination.

Decreasing Cost and Improving Quality

Situation:

In 2011, Prince Castle finished development of their 200-pound UHC holding bin unit and required the product withstand shipment by sea from Chicago to China.

Solution:

JaMar designed protective packaging for the UHC units through a cross-functional analysis of manufacturing, engineering, and industrial design components to ensure all functional requirements were met. The unique packaging design maximizes space utilized on shipping pallets through the use of foam, enabling safe stacking of units while absorbing shock. Corrugated was substituted for wood, decreasing the weight while reducing material costs by 15-20%.  JaMar also conducted a series of custom transit tests to ensure the protective packaging would prove effective before, during, and after shipment.

The protective packaging, designed and manufactured by JaMar, has proven to be a success. There have been savings in material cost, as well as in freight with the reduction of unit size and weight. The UHC unit continues to arrive at its destination with no reported damage claims at this time.
